Using Packet Optical to Migrate to All-Packet Transport

ECI recently participated in the Telecommunications/Infonetics "Using Packet Optical to Migrate to All-Packet Transport" webinar. The webinar discussed how packet optical transport products can be used to cost-effectively build flexible packet optical transport networks. ECI's dynamic, flexible packet-optical solutions portfolio was highlighted during the webinar.

Webinar synopsis:
Carriers around the world are involved in IP network transformation projects to simplify their network layers, use fewer technologies, and move to all-packet. These realities inspired manufacturers to create packet optical transport products, which have configurable parts of Ethernet switching, SONET/SDH MSPP, WDM transport, and ROADM, and will incorporate Ethernet transport tunnel technology such as PBT/PBB-TE, T-MPLS, and S-VLANS.

Packet optical transport products allow service providers to deploy single node configurations from all-TDM to all-packet, serving as migration platforms to get from today’s TDM transport to the eventual fused Ethernet-WDM optical transport. Most major optical manufacturers have products available now or will soon.

The purpose of this webinar is to show service providers how packet optical transport products can be used to create flexible packet optical transport networks while reducing capex and opex.

Specifically, attendees will learn about:
  • Problems that packet optical transport products solve
  • Considerations for a packet optical transport product approach vs. router over WDM
  • Important new technologies for packet optical transport products
  • Platform architecture approaches, benefits, and trade-offs
  • Management functions for service providers
