“Where the Communications Industry is Headed” – iSMART DSM L3 Wins Light Reading Top Pick 2009 Award

“[iSMART DSM L3] looks set to extend the useful life of copper networks for high-speed broadband, and that’s got real appeal in those markets where regulation and cost is making FTTH a tough prospect.” – Ray LeMaistre, International News Editor for Light

PETAH TIKVA, ISRAEL – October 28, 2009 – Light Reading, the world’s leading publishing, events, and research company targeting communications service providers, has selected the iSMART Consortium's Dynamic Spectrum Management Level 3 (DSM L3) technology as the Light Reading Top Pick 2009 in the Telecom Software (EMEA) category. This award, according to Light Reading, recognizes products and services that best indicate where the communications industry is headed in the next 12 months.

The iSMART Consortium's DSM L3 technology, in development by consortium partners ECI Telecom and Actelis Networks, can multiply the coverage area of VDSL2 equipment by a factor of up to 10. This will enable operators to cost-effectively provide the highest-speed VDSL2 broadband services, such as IPTV and telepresence, over existing copper access infrastructure.

Ido Shargil, chairman of the iSMART Consortium and head of system engineering at ECI Telecom commented, “This award is a reflection of the enthusiasm that operators expressed for DSM L3 when we demonstrated it for the first time at Broadband World Forum Europe. ECI is confident that once this innovative technology becomes an industry reality it will drive the high-speed broadband world for years to come.”

iSMART recently presented the results of the first round of testing performed by three tier-1 network operators in a live demo at the Broadband World Forum Europe. Results showed that DSM L3 practically eliminates crosstalk interference between twisted copper pairs, dramatically increasing the speed and range of VDSL2 service over copper.

The iSMART consortium’s DSM L3 technology really is the next frontier in implementing high-speed broadband over copper, according to Actelis Networks’ Chief Technology Officer Ioannis Kanellakopoulos, who believes the performance the consortium is achieving is exceeding everyone’s expectations.

“One of the most exciting aspects of this new technology is that it opens up a myriad of application possibilities, most of which were previously considered untouchable for copper-based networks,” said Kanellakopoulos. “Actelis and iSMART continue to work on additional exciting advancements that build on this technology, and we are very pleased that Light Reading has recognized the importance of the work the consortium is doing for the benefit of service providers worldwide."
